When my brothers and i were wee lads, our beloved Mom was out cub scout leader. In Canadian (and international) scouting, the leaders of the cub pack are named after characters in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Mom was Akela, Mikki Gladstone was Bagheera, we also had a Baloo and others.
After Mom passed away and the brothers and I were sorting through items, Dan and I assembled a tub of “woggles” which are little sliders designed to hold the kerchief/scarf together around one’s neck. Of course, there is plenty of creativity available for such a device – many are evidenced in this collection.
High up a mountaintop of ancient uplifted coral, unaccompanied by bodyguards, escalades or a single Marley (unlike “reincarnated” snoop), I found a happy place– surrounded by thousands of little ladies. I squeezed the buds to savour the moment and smells of mangos and papayas, limes and skunks. Snapped with the usual analogue disposable camera. Note audio recorder in hand. My wanders are different now. I still wonder.

Went a little crazy shopping today. You know, I’m quite a consumer.

In honour of Chicago Cubs baseball winning the World Series in dramatic fashion just a year after the Grateful Dead rocked Soldier field for 3 nights, i shared this snap of a visit to Wrigley Field from about 1988.

“I’m not even sure how you describe that,” said Dave, aka Uncle Weed, after Mike Watt had ripped through one of his songs so quickly we were certain his fingers had turned to butter and his bass strings melted along with ‘em. And that’s sayin’ something. Uncle Weed is a MAHOOSIVE Watt fan.
So, Mike Watt an’ his Missingmen (who are drummer Raul Morales and guitar wizard Tom Watson – last seen also backing up a solo Lou Barlow) were in town. They played at lightnin’ fast speeds through the third part of Watt’s life opera (and latest album) Hyphenated Man, thanked the city of Vancouver fer comin’ out on a weeknight during a tense Game 7 of a hawkey game (‘Nucks v. Hawks), and made a poignant dedication to Poly Styrene who passed away the other day.
