Exhibit: Douglas Coupland mixed-media at VAG, vol. 7 (paintings, remix’d / G7)

Notes about Group of 7 and Coupland
here, this blurb tells all about DC and the G7 (which was a treat for me as i’d just published my mixed-media piece about Varley) – note to self: i need to get him a copy of the essays

Evidence from mixed-media master Douglas Coupland’s exhibit at Vancouver Art Gallery – the assortment of items i captured from the wide-array of mediums he works with/in, are arranged into 7 volumes for convenience. This is volume 7, Painting, remix’d/G7 (my title, not his). Note: some of these paintings were “technically only sorta” part the Coupland exhibit as i recall. I don’t know really.

G7 painting (Varley?)
“don’t take photo on the 2nd floor” i was instructed – but Varley never told me that, so…

Scrapbook: ephemera assembled in leather bound with delicious paper…

Journal: Gabriola > Japan > Australia, 2015 / ephemera (leather bound from Pete Word)
Scrapbook: Gabriola > Japan > Australia, 2015 / ephemera (leather bound from Pete Word)

Did I mention I love making scrapbooks? Scissors and glue and (miscellaneous & travel-related mostly) ephemera assembled into handmade journals with delicious paper to create a story of sorts. I have stacks of these documented in this archive for my reference and your amusement.

Post’d: envelope backs – basic manila with inky stamps

Post’d: envelope backs – basic manila with inky stamps

To remind and inspire myself, i often photograph envelopes before they embark on their journey. The fronts contain folks’ personal address (which i shoot to keep a record i never actually look back upon to recall who i’ve mailed) so i shan’t share that bit, but i will gallery up the backs – really for no purpose, just for amusement and artsy funtimes.

This batch are under-stated (made in Penang, Malaysia to transport watercolour pictograms) hearty manila card-sized and adorned with new-that-day inky stamps proclaiming various instructions or attributes, along with my distinctive seal of approval.

Suitcase of cigarettes… / Towns and Trains

Saffron robes
And a suitcase full
Of cigarettes
Eating past dark

We trade a blue-spotted orange
For bag of salted cashews
In a train compartment
Bound for a jaunty frontier

The garland of marigolds for him
A dried purple bloom
Intertwined within
my battered straw hat

Scrapjournal: Sri Lanka, blue / ephemera (2017-18)

Scrapjournal: Sri Lanka - ephemera etc.
Scrapbook: Sri Lanka, 2017-18 / ephemera + musings (blue stamped cover)

Another scrapjournal for the archive, this one containing the usual assortment of paper-y bit collected in Sri Lanka where i received Ayruvedic panchakarma treatment and rambled around a wee bit staying at faded-glory “grand” hotels, rustic tea shops rife with horse race punters, and jungles of monkeys. Left under strained confusing circumstances but that’s neither here nor there.

Nevertheless, a few sample pages to provide evidence of above annotations for your amusement.

Artifacts (youngtime): Bankbooks

Savings accounts, just for the bankbook…

I wasn’t a lad who obsessed over money by any means but kept a savings account from when I was a wee little dude primarily to receive a cute little notebook (and for a mandated reason for saving i shan’t discuss here). Then I discovered punk rock and removed all the money to buy records…

Here are two examples, one shiny gold and magnificent, the other similar aside from the horizontal layout and displayed in b&w for reasons unknown. There are others somewhere. I still love little notebooks and have little interest in banks (pun ha!).
