Wifu just came home (from a 10 hour day of tree trimming) and then had to rush to the post office to pick up 2 fresh alive Namako (sea cucumber) before they close 6 PM Friday as stinky live seafood left over the weekend in post office is a bad call

{When I worked as a submarine tour guide in Guam years ago, the divers would pull up sea cucumbers and show them through the vessel window to the amusement and amazement of Japanese guests who explained to me that these are an expensive delicacy… I just thought they look like turds}
And, though I’ve eaten many interesting foods in my “Japan 2.0” time (hello fugu) this was the first… But compared to some other things I’ve tried, was more surprised by the very chewy texture and rather mild taste
Served a few different ways with different sauces:
The first shot shows our little guy feeling ill in bed posing with the big (just gonna say it, ugly) sea creature still squirming, but slowly

The second is the sliced and prepared namako ready for eating – kept a little bit of sake on standby for aesthetic and rinsing purposes

And speaking of beautiful, the 3rd snap are the innards of the sea cucumber… Evidently we’re going to eat this, somehow

I should point out I had a dram of Sons Of Vancouver whiskey on ice in the bath afterwards a palette cleanser of sorts
