Ichiro: card #24 “Papa and Ichi” (insta) / 7.23

Hey Buddy, we made it through our first month!

We’re getting pretty good at stuff (especially bath time and singing ridiculous songs to you).

In this snap, we are discussing plans to watch summer hockey. plans to watch Summer Olympics thwarted obviously, but, *the universe works in mysterious ways* and Lil Stanley and I will be enjoying breakfast time hockey starting very soon.

Also, I came here to say that Ichi-Stan turned “one month old” on the 23rd, I am the proudest papa ever and love to kiss his little head.
More coverage of our “one month birthday“ rituals (shrine, grave!) now available coming soon, I know you’ll wait patiently.

PS today is father/grandfather‘s birthday #65 (more to come…)

Diary: Choosing a Tree from City (for baby)

Our local city government of Okayama has a splendid program which offers us a choice of tree sapling upon significant life events, including wedding and birth of child. As we’ve accomplished both now, we get a second tree. Hooray.

(As you likely know, selected a Peach / Momo for wedding, picked it up from a park and blossomed this spring around when John Prine passed).

The choices include Japanese maple, dogwood (provincial tree of BC), and a few others. We ticked the box for “peach” (which are the “famous item of the area” and mailed in the postcard and will await instructions to pick up to add to our burgeoning orchard of fruits here at Tsuchida Cottage.

Diary: Tie dyes for Ichiro + Deadhead treats from Brother/Uncle Dan

{Catching up with…} Leading up to Ichiro’s birth, another wonderful package arrived – this one from brother Dan (with postal assist by brother Bob) containing an assortment of handmade treats and other related goods.

Most noteworthy were a variety of tie-dye t-shirts including one for papa (hello!), mama and the forthcoming-at-the-time baby in our “family tartan“ which he also made for various brothers and nieces and nephews. Will make a splendid family photo one day.

In the meantime, here’s two of us, and the tie-dyes on standby for little Ichi-Stan.

Also in the mix there’s a few gifts of soccer scarves for some friends Dan met during his last visit and, a variety of Grateful Dead socks for us and the notable Deadhead/goat farmer Mac.

Ichiro being extra special got an additional tie-dye which, paired with his various bibs and hats would be extra cool.

Thanks brother/in-law-uncle Dan for being so thoughtful and we’ll soon I’ll put on our tie-dyes for a photo with the young nephew.

Note: Dan learned his tie-dye trade, well perfected it anyway, from Lance who along with Leslie were proprietors of Aaron’s Tie-Dyes for many years. Dan and I were able to assist – in my case, purely as a “road trip logistical assistant”, and indeed, it was the tie-dye is that introduced me to Lance and his cohorts other then-new ISP (OlyWa.net) in a totally life-changing coincidence of asking for change for laundry machine.

Diary: sewing things for Ichiro + tie-dyes and pee-caps

Diary: Sewing Things for Ichiro / assortment – card, hat, bib, tie-dye and “pee cap”

{Catching up with…} Scant days before our adorable baby came into the world, my remarkable wife fired up her mom’s sewing machine and decided to start with making so many thing… Then we busied ourselves with a few photo collages combining these handmade items with custom tie-dye shirts received from brother/uncle Dan and card from Kim, Brad, Ben, April (among other delights to be documented later).

Started with cloth diapers (not pictured) / easy right? So Then moved on to these incredibly handy “pee caps” (meaning little cloth “cones” to put over his willie when changing diapers…

– as it turns out, lil fellas in general often use the sweet freedom of a diaper change to let loose with their venting)…

Then made a completely cute soft cotton hat with “io” initials (which i want to make into a rubber stamp as well).

Then came bibs! oh the bibs! using Aloha print cloth i’ve had in my stash since 1996 or so, these hav a velcro tab for easy (and safe) on and off and style points to spare.

“For me, the purest form of worshiping the divine is to immerse in water at the end of a day with family. I think this is Japon’s greatest contribution to the world.”

“Papa Naptime” + Grateful to you

We (OK, me) are slowly trying to provide personal responses as gracious and loquacious messages coming in via so many channels.

We (really we) are truly touched by so many old friends, sudden friends, well known, hardly known, kindly & thoughtful folks have appeared with their well wishes and stories. #grateful

Rather than just a simple “thank you“ I am compelled to answer completely and thoughtfully and thoroughly so, please know that your messages are seen, so very pleasantly received, especially when including stories and memories and anecdotes – and one by one, you will receive a proper response.

Protip: Remember you can fill out the “Postal Club“ form and eventually you’ll receive a special postcard.

Of course, spending this time “in the moment“ with this tiny magical human rather than locked into the laptop mode / but slowly sorta finding a balance.

In the meantime: truly so completely grateful. To YOU.
