“Kerouac in Kobe” – *On the Road scroll* in Japan / video interview + exhibit

grab your passport, map and suitcase and let’s go Go GO!

A rollicking mixed-media revue of a groundbreaking exhibit in Japan featuring a stunningly-reproduced facsimile of the taped-together sc/roll manuscript of what became Jack Kerouac’s seminal, counter-culture-sparking novel “On The Road.”

Blurb: A lively conversation between storymaker Dave Olson and with Professor & President of Beat Studies Assoc., Matt Theado of Kobe City University Dept of Foreign Studies, at BB Plaza Art Museum in Kobe, Japan, summer of 2021 after the event was delayed for a year for *public health conundrums* and re-imagined to include a truly remarkable collection of ephemera, chapbooks, broadsides, posters, typewrtier, records, various editions of On the Road, related book, maps, Japanese language glossary and much more – most provided by Kazu-san of Flying Books of Tokyo.

The fast-placed video includes many artifacts from the exhibit and from the host’s life of travels and evidence of “living beat” to connect the experience to *anyone’s* life (that means “you” if you choose).

Oh so glad you stopped by for “Kerouac in Kobe”

Riffs:

  • Logistics of creating the”authorized forgery/reproduction” of the noted taped-together original manuscript & how the original plan of bringing the original manuscript (and Mr. Jim Canary) was thwarted
  • The symposium of writers, scholars, translators held at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (YT archive)
  • Observations about Jack’s process in writing the work (and dispelling the myth of a benzadrine-induced manic type-athon) including the importance of “working with you got,” notebooks, list taking, knowing where you are going
  • How he immediately re-typed on “regular paper”, changing names and making ready for publication
  • Scenes of life of America in transition at the time, the embrace of bohemian culture

Diary: Tsuchida Oasis (& sleep + Nick Suzuki)

Watched hockey game (!), posted a few riffs at my creative life archive (you are here) then put together this lounging oasis at Tsuchida Station. Yup, screened in tent canopy with inflatable swimming pool with peach tree inside and bamboo forest behind.

Tsuchida Station oasis (in process)

Re: Canadiens in Stanley Cup final & east Asian heritage players ~ I’m wondering if Nick Suzuki might have a chance to be in first Japanese-heritage player to hoist the cup? Paul Kariya went to the finals of course but didn’t win the chalice. I’m probably forgetting someone – who?

Jim Paek who won 2 Stanleys (had short-time Canuck Richard Park in my tired head) with Mario and Penguins in early 90s.

Note: Nick Suzuki – who wears #14 for Habs – is 5th(?) generation Japanese and, not-surprisingly, related to noted Canadian eco-biologist David Suzuki

(Note: some new sleeping medication making a huge difference)

Memento: Stanley Cup snap in Real Clear Sports

As an enthusiast of creative commons “alt copyright”, I publish/shared many photos under an “non-commercial/attribution/sharealike license” which resulted in my images popping up in many places, often not with the proper attribution and dubious commercialization, but hey, life’s complicated like that sometimes. Nevertheless, I do try to document these things for the permanent record. In this case, my photo of the Stanley Cup (snapped at an NHL trophy exhibit at SLC Olympics in 2002) used and shared in many places, including / here in “Real Clear Sports” (whatever that is) in a bit of “meta” documentation using a screenshot of an archived version of the page.

Ace Correspondents in Edmonton – KK and MC at Stanely Cup Game 6, 2006

Quasi-official Canucks Outsider correspondents (and certified Internet Rockstars) Kris Krug and Megan Cole checking in with wicked excited video blogs from Edmonton game 6.

KK says, “Unlike any sporting event I’ve ever been to! Come check out the Oilers fans going completely nuts before the start of Game 6.”  See the nuttiness on You Tube.
