Postboxes: US Mail Variations

“The classic U.S. home mailbox, with its distinctive curved top and front-facing door, has become an iconic symbol of correspondence and community. Its shape—practical, weather-resistant, and instantly recognizable—emerged in the early 20th century as a way to protect letters and parcels from the elements while providing easy access for both the mail carrier and the homeowner. The curve serves both function and form, creating a visual link to the flow of communication: messages traveling across neighborhoods, cities, and the globe.

For me, these mailboxes are more than just functional objects—they’re touchpoints for the stories we send out and receive. They’re the starting and ending points of correspondence, a tangible connection in an increasingly digital world. The idea of letters and postcards passing through these boxes creates a connective tissue that spans continents, time zones, and generations. Over the years, I’ve come to see them as symbols of creativity, later using their forms as canvases for art. Each mailbox, like a blank page, offers the potential for connection, storytelling, and personal expression.”
