Vinyl Time Capsule from 1991 (so much 1980s wave, punk, world & soundtracks)
Flipping through a big box of vinyl which had a long journey to find me in a barn in Japan. Most records started in Vancouver, then we left at a friend’s house in Salt Lake City in 1991 when I left on a Grateful Dead tour and didn’t return until 2016. So many gems purchased with odd job monies, including:
Oingo Boingo “Only A Lad” 10 inch, Stewart Copeland’s The Rhythmatist and Rumble Fish soundtracks, The Jam “Snap” 2x album, The Pretenders “The Singles”, Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon”, The Who “Happy Jack” (original Decca), a few by Wall of Voodoo, Big Country (rip Stewart Adamson), Lou Reed, The Germs Live at Whiskey a Go-Go, 54-40 (you may know “I Go Blind” from Hootie and the Blowfish) and a riff about the Smilin’ Buddha sign, The Replacement “Stink”, The Ramones (including an empty sleeve), Spinal Tap (soundtrack, gatefold), X “More Fun in the New World”, Beat Farmers, Raunch Hands, Del Fuegos, Bob Marley “Confrontation” (with Jamaica storytime), Pursuit of Happiness “Love Junk” with my doppelganger Moe Berg, The Stench (with riffs about SLC private clubs and Speedway Café) and sidebar with my experience as a non-useful roadie with Bad Yodelers, Police “Synchronicity” (2 copies for some reason), Let’s Active “Cypress” with REM namechecks, Black Flag “Jealous Again” (riff about TwinTone, SST, Lookout, later Subpop labels and tour info sharing, Cat Stevens / Yusef Islam and his affection for geometry and illustrated book included,, and a few more from Cat, finally Roger Whitaker’s Christmas album (big in Germany), oh Enino Moricone’s soundtrack to The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, wait,… a Steel Drums album – Whew!
Plus flashes of more which were already stashed away like REM x2, Jello Biafra, Violent Femmes, “Life in the European Theatre” compilation, JFA, more Bob Marley, Nina Hagen (missing), Flipside vinyl fanzine, SNFU, and Jack Kerouac box set.
Also riffs about crappy vinyl pressing quality in the 80s and love of re-issues, gatefolds, and liner notes.
Thanks to Dan T and his Dad (rip), buddy Dane, brother Anders, pal Banghi, and others who lent and hand (and didn’t pilfer)
Alternate cover art in case you don’t like the others :)
