Finally finished off the White Poppies for Remembrance series on Postcards from Gravelly Beach with moments to spare before Remembrance day (being a year since i recorded the content). D.O.A. Smash the State DVD release show Sept. 27th The Plaza Club, Vancouver, BC World renowned punk band D.O.A. is back with the brand new DVD “Smash the State.” It will be released September 25th, 2007 on Joe Shithead’s Sudden Death Records.
This long awaited compilation is loaded with a ton of raw footage shot at four shows in the San Francisco/Bay Area and the infamous Canada Day Anarchist Picnic in Vancouver.
The DVD features D.O.A.’s original line up: Joe Shithead Keithley, Chuck Biscuits, Randy Rampage and Dave Gregg at their best. Smash the State includes 21 classic songs, interviews, newscasts, plus footage of the day anarcho punks took over Vancouver’s StanleyPark on July 1st, 1978.
Guest appearances by: Keith Morris (Circle Jerks), Dirk Dirksen (Mabuhay Gardens/San Francisco punk guru), JB Shayne (legendary Vancouver DJ) and Zippy Pinhead (Los Popularos, The Dils)
Canada’s punk godfather Joe Shithead had this to say: “I really wanted people to see the original version of D.O.A. performing. You know, the completely raw band that went out and took on the world. So I gathered together some of the best footage I could find and came up with Smash the State. Most of the footage is taken from shows in San Francisco and the EastBay. This makes a lot of sense, as San Francisco became D.O.A.’s home away from home in the late seventies and into the eighties.
Our very first show outside of Vancouver was in S.F. I took a train, Biscuits and Rampage took a bus and Brad Kent hitch hiked. When we arrived we had to scramble around to find enough gear to play. But it was great, so from that point on, it just took a phone call like “Hey, can D.O.A. play a show with the Avengers and the Dead Kennedys next week?” Of course we fucking can! So we would hop in any old wrecked vehicle we could find, and headed down to the Bay area to help start a punk rock riot.
The last part of the DVD was our fifth show. It was an anarchist gathering in Vancouver‘s StanleyPark on Canada Day in 1978. It was billed as “Anti-Canada Day”. We didn’t have a permit, so the cops tried to stop D.O.A., The Subhumans and Private School from playing that day. Our pal Phil Smith managed to talk a local picnicking church group into lending us their park permit once the picnic was over. This of course infuriated the Vancouver Police, but they could not stop the show. This is documented on Smash the State, there’s even footage of Rampage giving a cop a kiss. Hey, cool shit, but I don’t know if the cop thought so.” – Joe Shithead
For a lot of people all over the world, D.O.A. was either their first exposure to punk rock, or one of their earliest memories of that blistering phenomenon. When you watch Smash the State you’ll understand why D.O.A. has influenced everyone from Green Day to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Henry Rollins to Jello Biafra, Rancid to Nirvana and NOFX to Bad Religion.

The whole gang was there (cosmo, Dingo, Bread, Leezer, Osmosis, Funboy, Toad …) to see a bit of music history as Sting thanked the Squamish nation for use of their Longhouse for rehearsal and called Stewart Copeland the best drummer in the world – yup.
Vancouver’s first punk band, The Furies will play their first show in 30 years!

Canada’s most influential punk band D.O.A. is teaming up with The Furies, Vancouver’s legendary first punk band for two shows at Richard’s on Richards, 1036 Richards St. Vancouver, BC.
The event has been dubbed Punk Rock Confidential and features a blistering cast. The amazing D.O.A. will headline the festivities. They are led by Canada’s godfather of punk, Joe Shithead Keithley, with the help of the legendary Randy Rampage on bass and The Great Baldini on drums.
The Furies started putting on shows at the old Japanese Hall in the summer of ’77. These mind blowing gigs shocked the public as the posters boldly announced “Punk Rock”. Now, The Furies, led by the incredible Chris Arnett along with the help of original bassist Jonathan Werner, are back. These shows will be their first in 30 years.
Rebel Spell will also play. They’re a great new band from Vancouver. Further support will come from First Reign, a good hard drivin’ outfit from Abbotsford.

Amigo Bread and I headed to the *exclusive* sold-out Tragically Hip show at the Commodore Ballroom on Granville St. downtown Vancouver last night.
This expansive 2nd floor venue is classic and fantastic – not “oversold” so you can actually move around and the crowd was thankfully mostly devoid of drunken yahoos with backwards baseball caps – well maybe not but too bad at all – decent music fans and plenty of hockey sweaters to be sure.
The Commodore boasts several vantage points to enjoy – balcony, couch lounge, bar stools, cocktail tables, private booths, and a famous floor – which is the best place to roast big doobie (which we did udring “Blow at High Dough”) and enjoy the fresh-ish air with no cigarettes (!) – both the lights (inventive but not overbearing) and the sound was outstanding (you could reallly tell the two guitars apart).
The band though, whoa dude, brung it – no longer upstart bar rockers – The Hip are now a squad of veteran rockers who seem to be realizing there enduring place in Canadian rock history and are working hard together to create quality music and offer a great experience to the attendees. “Ahead by a Century” was a high-light – the rather gentle tune really spread wings like a soaring falcon flying over the Tigris and Euphrates .
As an aside, the band seem like 5 very different guys that probably don’t hang out much off tour – that’s just my hunch – but know that the group snyergy and magic mojo just happen “all the time” so one must be grateful to find collaborators with chemistry.

The Hip are hip to amateur recording and such so extensive material abounds and the band release live tracks and other gems via TheHip.com plus have their own Flickr sets and encourage participation in a Hip Photo Group – more content from passionate bloggers is at Hip Fans and live shows are archived by fans at HipBase.
Bread shot some neat vid clips and snapped photos and me recorded some snippets of sound (“swim to daddy baby”) which may or may not be usable.
I subscribe the various KEXP feeds for hours of podcast entertainment. This terrestrial and virtual radio station put out a song of the day, live performances and a killer experimental show called Sonarchy Radio recorded at the non-profit Jack Straw studios.
Their “flagship” podcast “Music that Matters” (iTunes)has a revolving host seat and a variety of contexts and usually quite good. Episode #26 however, blew me away. Hosted by engineer Scott Colburn, the show sounds amazing with eye candy headphone mojo flowing and unique bands busting it out – noe of which i’d ever heard of and all of which i enjoyed.
A combo with marimba and vibraphone, well forget it, … here’s the track list, go download it, torch a fatty and put on the headphones as Scott takes you through the recording process with relevant anecdotes and commentary about the engineer’s art.

Scott has produced a smattering of noteworthy acts (from the mighty Mudhoney to legends The Sonics and The Wailers), he’s a hands-on producer/engineer since he is also a musician (he plays in Sun City Girls) and lives and records in a giant old church in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle as you can learn in this article from the Seattle Weekly. from which i also borrowed this photo of the engineer in question.
Man I am crushed sad about ElliottSmith dying. He was my age, walked the same Division street, drank in the same bars here in Oly when recording for Kill Rock Stars.
Now he’s all dead and another rock n’ roll sidebar – cynical comments about drug and alcohol abuse and pressures of fame.
Sure he was sad, sure he tangled with the bottle but damn, it has been already to hard of a few months – Tommy Chong in jail for 9 months(!), Dan Snyder slipping away, Dany Heatley tortured and hassled — and now ElliottSmith, another talent, impossible to replace.
Either/Or was in the CD player when I heard the news – oddly great loving music for being so sad. I wasn’t sure what to do. I took a few minutes and walked past Kurt Cobain’s house a couple block away and thought of the pain he felt to make that fateful decision. A knife? in the chest? Damn LA. Damn grammy, damn movies soundtracks and publicity shoots or whatever other contrived demon drove him…. geez I hope he’s happier now.
It rained more here than ever before (that’s saying something in the NW), flooing even – seemed a fitting mood to say so long to such a emotionally sophisticated song-crafter.
Re-watching my beloved Canucks trounce the Sabres made me feel only a little better. Elliott was/is to music what Artem Chubarov is to the Canucks – hard working and solid on the details, underrated despite the accolades and not a pretty dude outside, just like the rest of us.
