Dec. 2013:
I said: Hey Man, I heard the KEXP podcast #26 you put out. Fckin’ fantastic – listened twice on my bus-> ferry-> bus commute in Vancouver BC. The audio quality was amazing and the bands were fantastic.
Colburn replied: thanks!! I suppose the quality is because I record all the music. I wouldn’t want to do a regular radio show. I’m an audio engineer and enjoy that more than anything else, but i like the ability I have to
get some of this stuff played on the “air”.
I then said: Any chance you could release your tracks as.mp3 instead of Real Audio? Even better, work with IODA Promonet to make the tracks available to podcasters through creative commons license – good promo for the bands, good music for the listeners, everybody wins.
To which he replied: No, can’t do that. The real audio files are just teasers for the bands sake. I ask each band if I can feature their cut and they usually agree. If I did the mp3, then I would have to get licenses signed like i do for the podcasts. If I did make the audio samples mp3’s, though, I’d still make them in mono and at a reduced bit rate. I’m not interested in giving music away, I’m interested in letting people preview the music that I talk about in my updates.
