Evidence: More records in the Kura (Gord Downie, Big Thief, Bob Dylan &…)

adding magic to the stacks with Big Thief’s Masterpiece, a masterpiece double vinyl from Gord Downie, and a piece from a master, Bob Dylan’s Planet Waves

Ummmm accidentally on purpose ordered some more records. Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Astrud Gilberto, Suzanne Vega, Big Thief, The Waterboys, Courtney Barnett, … more Tanya Donelly, more Weakerthans, more Hey Rosetta, Bob Dylan, and The Linda Lindas (via band camp).

I *should show you* one of these days (problem is, when I play the  records in video, creates intellectual property conundrums – and music must always be played in the kura barn where internet does not exist for streaming) #rules

Diary: Off to Library + cuppa Joe / good luck, stamps, ovens & social niceties

Note: Some of this riff originally appeared in “real time” via FB social channel to the amusement of many (everyone loves a comically large bootle of hooch!) – shared here for posterity in edited form with several other topics included.

++ Confession ++

pardon me, but does this come in a large?

Well, i am at risk of irreparably damaging my reputation as a good resident of Okayama as it seems some library books are overdue.

I know! Terrible. Shameful breach of trust.

As such, i will finish this coffee (delicious by the way) and hop on the luxurious Uno Bus (seriously wi-fi, power outlets, clean, comfy, pay-per-stop) to restore my status as a decent human.

I’ve really let myself go off the rails – i’ll try to improve.

fondly, dave

PS i will not blame this on this comically huge bottle of saké – seriously, 18 litres and came in a wooden crate. Just when you think Japanese people are all diligent and serious, they pull out this! i mean the logistics of shipping, lifting, holding, pouring alone are baffling

Checkpoint busstop (yes my life does look like a Studio Ghibli movie)

Did i mention the bus has great wi-fi, power outlets, seatback headrest covers, and pay-per-stop system? Uno Bus is truly great.

Also before leaving washed dishes, folded laundry, started rice, composted food scraps, fed rabbit, aerated kobo starter, refilled kerosene heater… and didn’t forget library books(!)

Ryoko’s out of town for 2 nights teaching a tree trimming workshop & stayed in a trad guest house with wooden bath. So cool. And she’s truly incredible (and doing great with pregnancy!)

Disappearing for Invigoration – Postcard #78 via video

Disappearing, invisibility, loneliness, depression, anxiety, being lost, trying to not be found, trying to find white space to invigorate… Sometimes these weave together, other times (perhaps) each remain exclusive.

Gord Downie, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski and me all try to figure out the nuance in different ways atop Turkish street music, trains from Kerala and Moncton, and various ephemeral music snippets.

Note: Also available in audio-only via all normal podcast channels and elsewhere in this library.

Tragically Hip, Victoria, BC, July 22nd, 2016 setlist, part 3 – with annotations

Notes (to edit)

Choosing which hat to wear to tonight #TragicallyHip show in #Victoria. Trilby or Mountie or…? Also, preshow meal jerked, beer can chicken

By the end, Gord was clearly spent but there was no melancholy or nostalgia or even banter throughout the show until he blew kisses and said thank you 100 times during the encores. Note the five song on encore set (two sets really)

The show started quick out of the gates while people were still lining up for beer and merch… There was an announcement that “the show will start in five minutes” and BAM! it came out of the gates like a rocket. So no Hip chant but, later in the show there was a “Gordie” chant. The outpouring of love from the crowd was unbelievable. Everyone on their feet and cheering like there’s no dress rehearsal, this is our life.

And while there was a fair bit of Gord ad-libbing, mimeing and other hijinx, he kept his schtick shorter and more concise so they could pack more songs into the allotted time. A lot of songs in just over two hours.

Also, Bobby Baker must’ve played a dozen different guitars at least.

Also worth noting, in the first set, the band played kind of “in the round” very close together and facing sort of each other, with video screen in black and white above them.

Johnny Fay used two different drum kits, both on the stage at the same time

Paul Langois has maybe the worst beard I’ve ever seen.

Sinclair’s bass cut through loud – like where it gives you that good kick in the sternum.

Gord did the microphone with cord as fishing reel and paintbrush amongst other things. Less of the “whirling dervish” and yes, more subtle antics.

Statistic of the night: number of shiny lamé suits Gord wore… 3. Purple, Silver, Gold

There were four songs if I recall correctly from the new album – all played in the series in the second half of first set. There was sort of a short break but not a true intermission, Gord changed his suit and some lightning storm video played.

The 4 players -As usual I suppose-barely cracked a smile. Game face all the way. Black, gray, white clothes contrasting with Gord’s shininess and resplendent hat with enormous feathers.

And for sure Gord looks skinny but not drastically unwell. And his voice was in top form.

Honestly it wasn’t sad until the end when there were some teary-eyes, including mine, during wheat kings and ahead by a century.

I will note, on some of the slow tempo songs, the band was sort of fighting about the speed, but that’s first show of the tour and lots of adrenaline.

Dear Canada, re: Tragically Hip

7-23-16, Victoria, BC

Dear Canada,

Tonight in the far far west, we’ll get the Tragically Hip all warmed up and feeling adored before sending the lads East to bask in your adulation.

Not sure what manner of show we’ll see tonight, not sure how we’ll all deal with cascading emotions and untold memories from the unwritten future, but i suspect plenty of plaid, hockey jerseys and demin-clad folk singing along to each song with enthusiasm realizing this is the… last time to holler aloud. I’ll be rocking suede fringe and possibly a mountie hat and strolling slow. No full tilt boogie from me this time around.

Anyhow, i’ll let you know how the show goes and say hello to Gord for ya.

Regards,

daveo/UW

(Meta)Physical Conditions of the Environment – Postcard #46

Pod cover - Postcards from Gravelly Beach - Meta-physical environment

Taking a Remembrance Day respite to enjoy a conscious discussion with ‘Trigger’ at Vancouver’s New Amsterdam Cafe, Dave O listens to the consequences and conditions of space, in tangible and gestalt senses, and reviews the paradigm shifts of Vancouver’s downtown Eastside ‘four corners’ – once one of the grandest intersections in the British Empire.

Later, he wanders and reads Walt Whitman (When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d) and Gord Downie (from Coke Machine Glow) to bring it ’round home for this part #7 of the White Poppies for Remembrance series.

Awakening to the Dawn of Potential – Postcard #45

Pod cover - Postcards from Gravelly Beach - Awakening Dawn Potential

Part 6 of the “White Poppies for Remembrance” series considers the opportunity cost of the lost human potential while at the Victory cenotaph in downtown Vancouver – along the way, troubadours sing about Providence, Joyful(ness) along with spontaneous percussion-scapes and city bus brakes.

DaveO examines the value of life with Gord Downie‘s swift deconstructions of existence from Coke Machine Glow, Henry David Thoreau‘s visionary stories of perseverance and the value of the mindfulness from Walden and a personal declaration of sovereignty and dignity from original Letters from Russia read in hospital to ole gramps.
